Spring is All hands on deck with preparing our gardens and landscapes with mulch and fertilizers but is that it..!? game over??

Absolutely not. The months of June and July in south eastern Pennsylvania have an equal importance in maintaining the overall health and well-being of your properties beauty. Scouting for insects, controlling weeds and pruning are all on the list.

Let’s start with insects

Scouting for Bagworms in evergreens.

Prepare for beetles with lawn treatment and look out for skeletonized leaves on cherry trees for instance.

Mites ….. a sneaky pest that often goes unchecked until the damage to your plants is severe.

June is also when we begin to see certain diseases like powdery mildew and black spot and dieback.

A ‘walk around’ is important to identify, plan, and treat before the heat of summer.

Now for pruning.

Summer is when we start our pruning of early spring blooming shrubs and shaping boxwoods and hedges as well as other specific plant species that benefit from a trim.

With corrective (severe) pruning being done in winter and early spring, now (July-August) is when most plants need a trim to maintain size shape and for some, leading to more blooms later in the year.

Summer is also a good time to evaluate what plants are thriving and which plants may not be performing as we would like.
